In reading the Room for Debate article, Is Digital Connectedness Good or Bad for People, I came to the conclusion that it is, in fact, both. Digital connectedness is a very good thing, it allows for the instantaneous transfer of massive volumes of information, allows instant communication across vast distances and therefore allows people to keep in touch with one another. This is a good thing. Our digital infrastructure today allows for things not considered possible before, and has led to countless innovations and realizations.
However, the problem with digital connectedness comes in when one becomes too attached to their digital lives. They get sucked in, and, soon enough, their digital lives and connectedness becomes the priority of their lives, diverting attention from other, more important things such as real-life relationships and jobs. What do you think about digital connectedness? Is the problem a real threat to our society and productiveness? Or do you consider it a continued advancement of human thought and society, to ascend beyond the need to create real-life relationships and connections?

Digital connectedness can have its good side and a bad side. While keeping in touch with people is good, it can be harmful to spend your whole life online rather than spending time in the real world.
ReplyDeleteOverall, it seems like digital connectivity is equal when it comes to being good or bad.
It really just depends on the way you use it.
As you said, I agree that digital contentedness can be seen as both a good and bad thing. Whether it is a good or bad thing really depends on the user and how they spend their time on their screens. However, even if someone is trying to stay on the good side of digital contentedness, it seems very hard not to be sucked into our digital lives and eventually spend too much time on it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fact that the ability to communicate over long distances is beneficial. However this inspires internet / social media users to view more content, which increases procrastination. Everyone becomes obsessed with finding the most recent news around the world or new memes.
ReplyDeleteBut in the hands of the right people, such as those that focus on building new technology, it can significantly advance society. So I believe it can both set us back in productiveness and also help reconstruct society.
