Should Trump Be Allowed to Block People On Social Media?

In the Room For Debate "Should the President Be Able to Block You On Twitter", they talk about Trump and how he uses social media all the time. He likes being vocal and doesn't censor himself on it, which is what people wanted for a president until they saw that he doesn't share their views. If Trump is so vocal and gets criticized and embarrassed enough on his Twitter, shouldn't he be able to do something about it? However it isn't just about being allowed to do something, it's that should he be allowed to block people on his Twitter.

The answer to that question is yes. He isn't infringing the the 1st Amendment because Twitter is a privately owned company and he isn't infringing on anybody's free speech. There is no censorship involved, it's just that he doesn't have to deal with harassment of people for what he says if it offends them. At the end of the day, he is a US citizen that has his own rights and is allowed to do as he pleases, just like anybody else. If other people like celebrities, republican/democratic politicians alike can block people, why can't he? He has just as much criticism as them, and blocking does not fully block those tweets from him.

  1. Yes, Trump is a U.S citizen but he is also the president of the United States and a celebrity. I also choose this debate because I found it funny that his has to be a topic of discussion. Both of the debaters agreed that Trump should not block anyone from seeing his tweets. The main reason that Trump wants to block people is so they can't criticize him and what he tweets. Yes other celebrities and politicians block people freely but they are not the leader of the free world. Trump should not block people even if they can still find a way to see his tweets because of his status.

  2. In all honesty, I also found it quite amusing that this was a topic for debate. I believe that journalists or critics are placing too much importance on this because, in the end, does it really affect anything or anyone? Simply blocking someone on social media does not prevent them from seeing your post another way, he can't keep a secret whatever he is posting from said blocked individual. He might do it to simply show them they are not on good terms, but then again why rely on social media to do so? I think the president should be allowed to block whoever he wants to block because it honestly does not make a difference. P.S. He should at least consult with his staff before doing so though.

  3. from Nayeli: Trump is a public servant. He exists to serve and protect the people of this country. A part of that is being readily accessible and accepting of all ideas and thoughts, even if they are critical of him or his positions. Although he is a public servant he is also a citizen of the United States which gives him the right to block people on social media but that doesn’t mean that it’s right.

  4. I say, let DJT continue to play games on social media and keep him away from any actual work.
