When the limelight becomes too bright

The debate "Is Digital Connectedness Good or Bad for People?" co-argued by Emerson Csorba talks partly about why the Internet connecting communities together is more detrimental than helping. He discusses the media's toxic effects onto famous celebrities or influencers that just want to live their daily lives without a big paparazzi stalking every step with endless pictures. Although they must've signed up for this type of life when Hollywood waltzed in, they do not in fact to continually make secretive plans that may take up days to plan due to constant vision on them.

Moving away from the big shots, the amount of limelight brought onto media users that are particularly attractive really does bring evolved forms of anxiety, social pressure, and last but not least, insecurity! Csorba states how the ubiquitous media addiction compels us users to show everyone else that we are also having a fabulous time going out with our plethora of friends hanging at a popular cafe because that's what really matters, isn't it?  I'm sure many have felt this way before and at times think depressive thoughts about the differences that seem to be ever so crucial. In summary, the main message of this post is to argue that active participation in social media can actually be very harmful to self-esteem and to social identity, so it is recommended to be less engrossed. Do you think believe social media's influence can be hurting and unhealthy to our health?

  1. I do think that social media can be a harm to celebrities and "normal" people alike, but I do feel that it still helps a lot. It helps us connect to our friends and gives us that sort of attachment to each other. A great example is Instagram and being able to have a private account. Most people just have their friends follow so they can show what is going on in their lives and not beg for the social attention of a public account trying to get likes.

  2. In a way yes, social media can be very harmful and toxic to people's health. Regardless of being famous or not, social media, or the Internet, is a powerful and destructive place.

However, I would like to add that although there are those cons, there are some pros. Social media gives people a temporary escape from reality. Furthermore, people can connect with each other from all over the place with a single tap.

Overall though, social media doesn't have a good overall effect on society.
