Now Is Not The Time For Ignorance

The news has always been apart of my life. Whether it be when I was spending the night at my grandparents house, and we’d have to watch the late night FOX news, because they didn’t have any other channels. Or listening to the news from my parents bedroom when I’d get ready for school, and hearing all that was happening around the world. With today’s modern technology, we are able to get breaking news alerts on our phones even before it even hits the TV. Like many others, my parents have deleted their news apps because it is, “too sad,” or, “the world is corrupt.” But in my opinion, ignoring the problems is what is making the problems. After doing one of my Long Reads on, “How the News Takes Over Reality,” by Oliver Burkeman, discussed how Erik Hagerman, an Ohio man who cut out media and all forms of news after Trump’s 2016 presidential win. Hagerman’s article caught fascination about his “blackout”. Imagine, since 2016, someone has not heard about what’s new on the Kardashians, the Sudan massacre, or what’s new with Trump. Many even wished they could do the same. However, their was a staggering amount who were disgusted with his actions. Kellen Beck countered Hagerman’s article by publicly declaring him as a man of ignorance, and,”the most selfish man in America.” The ones who are going through real life problems of separation, or terrorism, they don't get to chose to go block out their news, because it is their life.

I agree with Beck. We can’t just delete our apps, and turn off the TV. We have to be aware and not let history repeat itself. We need to go out and stand for what’s right because change happens with us.

  1. Yes, I fully agree with your point of view. We live in such an important time period where technology has reached new heights. With the touch of a button we are able to find out what is happening half way across the world. I will admit that I have been ignorant to today's news. Even though, I have the ability to access this information. It is something I am not proud of, but it is a goal of mine to change. Now that we are becoming young adults it's our job to continue the progress that mankind has made. If we slowly lose our interest in the past and the events that are happening around us, we will be back in square one.

Not only do I think being ignorant will lead to history repeating its self, but it will also slowly isolate us. This is another effect of not being aware, and it's scary to think about. Nowadays no one can be fully independent of others; the world has become dependent on each other. We need to be informed of all that had happened and all that is happening.

  2. I couldn't agree more. Many people try to ignore problems which causes the problem to grow bigger. People will only care for a problem if it has anything to do with them. Like the earthquake, people start paying attention more to the news after two earthquakes hit back to back. We should find solutions to are problems instead of ignoring it like it isn't there. Before the problem gets bigger over time or just goes away and comes back to haunt us. By doing this it'll prevent many things like riots, protest, or even boycotts.

  3. I agree with your opinion. Ignoring all the things that are happening all over the world won’t solve these problems. People need to be aware and know how they could help to resolve these issues. People nowadays are being distracted with meaningless celebrity tittle-tattles to the point that they’re no longer informed about the real problems that are threatening our society. Along with being aware, we need to know that we have to stand up and speak for what’s right. Ignoring controversial topics is more damaging than we may think.

  4. from Nayeli:I know lots of people who do the same type of internet cleanse to block out the hate in the world. Although it may be hard to listen to we must be knowledgeable about the world's problems in order to fix them. We can't afford to be ignorant to the trauma the world brings because then we have no hope of making the world a better place.
