Does AI have a chance of outsmarting humans?

“Humanity would cease to exist, predicted the essay’s author, with the emergence of superintelligence, or AI, that surpasses human-level intelligence in a broad array of areas.” (Hvistendahl 3) This quote caught my eye while I was taking a look at the article about AI possibly outsmarting humanity. What this is stating is everyday, humans want to get out of doing a lot of things and for AI’s to do everything for us but do we know the risks that might come with letting them take over our lives?

In this long read, Mara Hvistendahl talks about the scary thought that has already probably crossed our mind, of AI taking over the entire world, including us humans. There are many ways we can prevent this but right now, everyone doesn’t think about the seriousness of this happening, they’re thinking of how to make life easier with technology just so we can be lazy and do almost nothing. Hvistendahl talks about researchers who think this isn’t that serious. They can just put a button or a switch to destroy or shut down whichever machine but it’s never that easy. Each and every day that goes by, technology keeps advancing and there’s no way we’ll be able to stop it if we keep making them as smart as humans or even smarter than us. Other researchers believe it’s important to take in consideration the AI’s consciousness because if we shut down all the AI’s, we are taking away their “right” of operating. It seems bizarre to me to think about how AI’s feel because at any given moment, technology can go from being our best friend and reliable source to our worst enemy and what we compete against to see who’s the last man standing.

  1. I agree that AI can pose a serious threat, even if we don't think about it every day. While we use them for our lazy needs, AI continues to get smarter to the point where they could become smarter than their creaters.

Hopefully, while scientists develop this new AI, they create it in a way that's easy to manage, so the hope of them taking over would end.

  2. I also agree that AI is a menace to humanity, and we are putting little awareness to it. At this moment we are all amazed and content with out technological devices, and don't think they can rebel on us. But, as we rely on then more on more we think they are very useful, having scientist making AI better by the day. This leads to AI getting smarter in order for them to help us, but it doesn't benefit us as much because we are helping AI getting wiser than humanity. Maybe even one day outsmarting us.
