Did Mother Teresa deserve to be canonized?

Two years after she passed away, Pope Francis approved sainthood for Mother Teresa. As a catholic, I personally believe it was great giving her sainthood but others think differently. I wasn’t born when Mother Teresa was still present but from what I read, hear, and have been taught about her, she was a very loving person who took care of a lot of people in her hometown and all across the world, who helped the poor, and who taught others how to love.

I chose to talk about this because as I was reading the debate “Should Mother Teresa be Canonized?”, Geneviève Chénard argued that Mother Teresa didn’t deserve the sainthood because even though she influenced people to do good, her real work didn’t stand up for her reputation. Though she was loyal to God and everyone else, she was also loyal to some people who were known for their horrible actions. For instance, she associated with Charles Keating, who was a lawyer and financer that destroyed thousands of customers savings and was convicted of fraud and racketeering. She was also associated with Haitian dictator, Baby Don Duvalier, who was known for torturing his people. I personally think the reason Mother Teresa associated with these people was to teach them how to do good as well as she did with others. She was known for being an open-hearted and forgiving person so I think her intention with these people was safe and she decided to see the good in them and forgive them for their sins because everyone deserves a second chance right? Overall, should we judge someone off the people they are associated with or the type of person they are to others? Was it truly a mistake to canonize Mother Teresa?

  1. The point that flies above critics' heads is what Mother Teresa symbolized. I am not very familiar with Mother Teresa, however I recognize that she indeed was a humanitarian that did promote peace and love. Sometimes in this era of many advancements, many overlook the ones that are not drastically revolutionary. In this case, the love and peace promoted by Mother Teresa was not deemed crucial to human kind, prompting people to judge her saint ship.

  2. I think a person should not be associated with the type of people they are with. Although I do think that we should be careful with the people we surround ourselves with. I know a story where this one guy was invited to hangout with some of his friends. They got in a car and his friends were doing a drive by shooting. In the end he was caught and had to go to prison even though all he did was get into a car with the wrong group of people. His "friends" didn't have to go to jail and he was used as bait. So I don't think we should judge people by who they surround themselves with but we should be careful with who we choose as friends.
