I recently read on social media where people were debating whether or not detention was useful for students. Many had a lot to say in comments about it not being useful at all and more of a waste of time. One user went on to say "Kids will be kids, having them sit in a classroom will only make them hate being at school even more". Some believe sitting down and reflecting upon their actions does not help for most kids. If they instead acted on their mistakes it would be much more beneficial for them to not do it again.
Others stated that it will teach them they should just behave and follow directions in order to not get punished. They further explained that it takes away there freedom and time outside of school so that they must learn not to do the action that got them there in the first place. Detention is used as a way for students to process the wrong that they have done. Do you feel that detention is helpful for students to learn right from wrong?
Kids think differently and some actually feel guilt about what they've done and will try to apply it the next time they do something. But some kinds just don't really care and just attend detention to get it over with and to not be in further trouble. Some children are taught to reflect on their actions, and some choose whether or not to listen, and it eventually leads to the reflection time in detention. Many already hate being enclosed in a room with other people and yes, I do agree that kids already hate school more because of detention since it takes away some of their freedoms so the more you take away a child's freedom, the more they will resent to the fact that they're forced to reflect upon their actions when they have free time to experience guilt on their own.

I think that school detention is helpful. Even if it doesn’t cause students to deeply reflect on their actions, it will still make them less likely to misbehave again because they won’t want to be put back in that position. While there are still some students who don’t care at all, the vast majority would try to clean up their act to make sure they wouldn’t have to waste time in detention again.
ReplyDeleteI personally am for keeping detention as a punishment unless a good alternative is found. If people simply say to just remove detention as a punishment, then what's to say that that won't encourage a kid to continue in their bad actions due to no fear of an actual punishment.
ReplyDeleteI think detention is helpful but at the same time it isn’t. It’s helpful for some kids to reflect their actions and to not do it again. However, we have those kids who like to be the class clown. When those kids have detention, they think it’s a waste of time and keep on doing the same thing to get more detentions. Overall, I don’t really see detention really useful for kids especially for the troublemakers.
ReplyDeleteI think that detention is quite useful. There are some people who like Hunter said, will not reflect on their actions but just won't do it again since they would not like to be stuck in that room again. However there are those who simply don't care and will continue to misbehave. Detention should still remain as a punishment because most people would not like to stay in detention and have their time taken away from them.
ReplyDeleteI believe that detention is a good thing for students. It acts as a punishment for them if they do something wrong and most students will avoid being defiant in the future to avoid having detention again. However, there will always be the trouble makers who don't oblige to the rules and detention is a pointless punishment for that small group of troublemaker students.
ReplyDeleteI think the idea of detention itself isn't a bad one where children are taught to reflect upon their actions however the common practice of detention is placing children who have detention in a room together and without the time to be alone and reflect upon their actions the children now have friends and allies who share their same viewpoint about how flawed the system is and it continues the cycle. So instead if it were feasible children should be solitary in detention so they can have the peace and quiet necessary to reflect on their actions.
ReplyDeleteI think detention is very useful for kids. It allows them to think about their actions. Although I notice sometimes students get detention for quite dumb reasons such as, chewing gum. It's really punishing them and making them think that they actually did wrong. But it also will teach them to follow simple rules.
ReplyDeleteI believe that detention is not useful in punishing students for their actions. A good point was brought up that giving students detention just makes them despise school more. I agree because students are just wasting their time there. Students are supposed to reflect upon their actions in detention, but I'm pretty sure their minds wander everywhere else but that. Instead of having detention, schools should have other ways of punishing the students rather than having them sit down and be quiet.
