Screen Time: Good or Bad?

In our nation today, kids and teens are constantly glued to their screens, whether their playing games, texting someone, or watching videos.  These kids and teens spend a lot of time on their devices.  The question is if it is okay or not.

In the article "Is Internet Addiction a Health Threat for Teens?", debaters discuss whether or not it's ok for kids and teens to be on their devices for a certain period of time.

Screen time has its good side and its bad side. On the good side, the things kids and teens do on the screens can help them with things such as discovering what they want to do for a career or for building relationships with others.

However, screen time has a bad side. A really bad side.

Too much screen time can cause kids and teens to become nonsocial and isolated from everyone. Also, kids and teens might be doing things online that are very nonproductive, and they do them over long periods of time. This causes laziness and bad character, especially since they are overdoing it.

If screen time is controlled, then nonproductive activity is okay. Removing screen time overall from kids and teens might not work so well, as they might try to find ways around it.

So, is screen time really a good thing? But, at the same time, is it really a bad thing?

  1. Based off of today’s society, technology has indeed become a plague that is very hard to get rid of among teens. Yes there are some positive usage of computers and phones to greatly up relationships and work productivity, but the disadvantages outweigh the positives. Like you mention, teenagers are commonly seen glued to the screen as if there is some sort of entertainment entrapping them: hunt, there is. In addition, rather than forming relationships at times, addicted people instead becoming rather reclusive and not socialize with others as much as they would without electronics.

  2. You mention that too much screen time can cause kids to become nonsocial however I have found this to be far from true in my own observations. I have some friends that struggle with types of (what I believe is) high functioning anxiety. This is a form of anxiety that often goes undiagnosed because the person is able to function in everyday life without the help of medication. I have found that those friends have extremely high screen times but they are not nonsocial. They can’t make many friends in “real life” so they make friends through online chats or video games. This helps them meet new people and have conversations that they couldn’t have had without access to screens.

  3. I feel that screen time takes people away from the real world. Being stuck on a device for hours on end is a big distraction from getting more important things done. For example, many students tend to watch more YouTube and Snap chat videos rather than getting their summer AP homework done. I might be speaking for others and from experience, but at least I have the guts to say if this were taken away from us all we would be able to put more effort and focus into our studies rather than that new Netflix series that just came out. All in all, screen time is just a big waste of time but people will still keep their eyes glued to the device because that's what this world mostly consists of nowadays.

  4. Another thing I want to add to this argument is why it is so hard for teenagers to get off their phone or tv screen. Lets say a teenager manages to give up being on the phone or video game for long. Well then what? Are they supposed to go hang out with their friends? The same ones who are still facing a screen somewhere? This creates an obvious problem because I think that this is a group effort amongst friends. It can only succeed if at least two friends manage to get off their screen or to be on it less. This is why it is so difficult to accomplish teenagers to get off their technology, because it's not only dependent on them but on their friend groups.

  5. from Nayeli: It has always been known that screen time comes with two sides to the coin. It’s a question of whether or not it’s personally good or bad for you. In my opinion, it’s good for me but also not. It helps me release stress but at the same time causes me to stop being in the moment. Another way to look at this question is is it overall good or bad for you.
