Silent Addiction

One of the topics from Room for debate is if internet addiction a health threat for teens. Internet Addiction is not just a threat for teenagers, but people of all ages. Internet could be an element of escape where people could be whatever they want to be and escape the real world. Internet Addiction should be taken seriously.

The most common victims of internet addiction are teens, because of social media. Social media allows users to share ideas, information, pictures, videos, and commentaries. It makes users form an impractical expectations for themselves that cause low self-esteem. Spending too much time on the internet could also cause lack of sleep that could lead to obesity, high blood pressure, heart attack, etc. This is not just for teens, it could also happen to adults too.

Internet Addiction is an Addiction for all ages. Even children or toddlers could start being addicted because parents today use the internet to teach their kids using educational apps or videos on YouTube. But this wouldn’t work because they wouldn’t learn how to socialize or communicate. Also, the technology couldn’t teach the fundamental things that the children need.

  1. I don't really think the internet is a true addiction. A true addiction is something you can't stop because it will hurt when you do or has a legitimate drug that is used for addiction. however, I will go by your bending of it and respond.

Yes, the internet can cause low self esteem because of made up expectations. You are also right that it can cause lack of sleep and lead to obesity; but so can almost everything else. Let's use homework as an example. If a teacher gives too much homework, it could stockpile with other teachers and cause the child to have a lack of sleep. Causing him to go down the unhealthy path. What I am trying to say is that the internet, like other things, can harm you. Except it really can help you. The internet is not an addiction in my mind because there really is nothing making it an addiction. People use it, some too much, but there is no addictive part to it.

  2. I think that the Internet isn't actually an addiction because addictions hurt you and others around you when you use it. Sure some people neglect their responsibilities at times to partake in a heated Twitter discussion but it isn't really hurting anyone to the point where the posters get arrested for sharing their thoughts on the internet.
I agree with your statement saying that staying up too late to be on the internet can cause lethargy and heart problems but some addictions involving drugs can do so much worse and people have their energy limits and can put their phone down while drug addicts are unable to. Also, some children are learning how to make friends via YouTube videos because of of the cartoons they watch involve other characters and it teaches children that friends are good too.
Yes some social media users only post to compensate for their low self-esteem but sometimes, people on the internet are really nice and can give out boosts of self-esteem like it were pamphlets.

  3. I do think the internet can be addicting but I don't think it's as bad as you think it's. Even though there are many stories of people getting hurt because of online bullies or they were on their phone and weren't aware of their surroundings. In the end both of those scenarios are their fault. They could of chose to ignore the bullies or deleted their social media account, and I'm sure they could of gotten off the internet while they were on the road. Also the internet can be so useful and positive. There are countless stories of people finding life long partners or friends though the internet. The internet also can be used for gathering information. I think the internet is a tool and how you use it is what decides whether the internet will be a negative or positive thing.

  4. The Internet is something we spend most of time on these days, but I don't believe it means we are addicted. In this day and age, our society revolves around the internet. In the past couple of years, schools have begun to incorporate more and more of the internet. Since then, we have to use our internet for our homework or for research purposes. As a result, our time on the internet has greatly increased. Even if you kept your child away from the internet at a young age, the chance of them not using it on a daily basis as they get older is pretty slim.
