Your Device Is Listening To You

In the article, "Smart Talking: Are Our Devices Threatening Our Privacy?", it brings up the topic of no longer having privacy due to our devices always tapping into our conversations. It states "if you want to know whether government agents or hackers might be able to hear what you say to a voice device, consider what happens to your words after you have spoken". These people would have the power to do whatever they wanted to with something that wasn't meant for the public.I feel that companies should have absolute proof that there is no way the device could pick up and record things that you are saying in the privacy of your home.
This made me think back to a video I once saw on YouTube where a guy observed the ads he was getting were related to the conversations he was having. He went on to attempt an experiment with this to instill that this wasn't all a big hoax. Well sure enough, ads and recommendations began to trickle in from the subjects he was talking about. I think it's a little odd that out of nowhere ads just begin to appear based off of conversations that were never inputted into the device itself. Do you believe that the device is listening in? If so is having devices worth losing out on your privacy?

  1. Yes, it is strange that ads were popping out that were similar to his conversations. I understand if you try to buy something online and ads pop up so you can purchase the item, but I don't truly believe devices are listening in. The reason why is I don't have the same experience as others, but if we were being listened there would be a huge outbreak of breaking people's privacy.

  2. With the new technological installations like Alexa and Amazon echo, yes, I believe that technology is listening to us. Being paranoid about this fact, I would gladly give up my phone if the government was listening to conversations because that's invasion of privacy. I have read about numerous Alexa's and their audio glitches in which they will automatically turn on and record conversations from its user and the fact that technology can record audio and send it to the company that made it makes me feel like this new age tech isn't going to give us anymore privacy.

  3. Yes, your devices are listening to everything you do, from hearing and typing. A phone would have to be constantly listening to its surrounds to be able to respond to a voice command. Everything that is typed. on most websites or apps, are usually logged. Devices will be listening to almost about everything, and it is not something and it is not a secret. Apps like facebook track everything that you do in order to place adds that might interest you so products can be sold. Cookies are used on many websites which track down all of your activity on their websites. In many of the terms of service agreements that people skip over, they will explicitly state that they track and log things that you do.

  4. While I do mostly agree with this post, I also don't think "listening" would be the right term to use since it somewhat implies that it's just your device recording you. Monitoring you would be much better to use and is also supported by your point in the second paragraph. Another example that's similar that can also be used is how it's been proven that companies monitor you internet activity and then reccomend ads that are related to your activity.
