How Computers Have Improved Learning

Today there was a city wide blackout which lasted for a couple of hours. It didn't last long, but it was an inconvenience as most of my summer homework is online and I was forced to stop working. This blackout made me think about how dependent we are on the internet, and Postman's warning about the use of computers and television in school.
Being able to have conversations online, particularly this blog, provide a huge advantage for us as students to exchange ideas about the summer homework. This is also helpful to our teachers we can get to know us through our writing before the first day of school, and have a better understanding of how we work and our current abilities.
Postman believed that televisions and computers would change our school system. This has undoubtedly happened, but was it a change for the better or the worse? I think it was for the better because students can now access additional information about topics that they've read, take notes on programs such as google doc, and communicate with classmates and teachers in an academic setting.

  1. I also think that computers have benefited our school system. Regarding the school’s record system, it has become much easier to input grades and take attendance now that averages can be computed instantly and because information can be sent to the main office right away. In terms of our learning, new fields such as computer science would not have become as widespread as they are now, and certain programs, such as the labs we would use in bio, would have been much harder to simulate in person. Collaborative sites, like this blog and google classroom, would have not been put to use and would have made it harder to work as a group outside of school. While it does make students more dependent on technology, the interaction that it encourages is worth it.

  2. from Nayeli: I understand the struggle of having an unexpected dilemma get in the way of your school work, especially as it pertains to the internet. We put lots of trust in the internet to work well so that we can get good grades. This is not always the case but i do think that it makes things a lot easier than paper assignments. I’m also all for saving the trees with less paperwork being printed.
