What Makes Us Human?

While I was reading the long read "Why Silicon Valley Can't Fix Itself" I both agreed with and questioned many things. One of the main things that stuck in my mind is how Facebook has the ability to take what a close friend likes and show that ad on your feed. This amazes me and is one instance where I don't mind a social media site using the things I view for another feature. I always want to share things with my friends, especially if the object positively impacted me, but I do not always think of showing them the products I use. This is a good way to indirectly share things that you enjoy with your friends.

This long read also brings up humanizing technology very often. I do not see how this can happen. I think we first need to ask the question what makes us human? Do we establish it by our forms of entertainment? Those are very different with every person. Is it everything that makes us different? I wonder how these developers change technology in order to make it more human. The article only talks about how changes are being made, but not exactly what they are changing. Mark Zuckerberg has made improvements to make Facebook more interactive with other people, but other than us communicating more online, I cannot think of what could make technology more human. How do you define what makes us human and in what ways do you think technology can be made more human?

  1. Artificial intelligence can and will never be humanized, because they cannot be purely by definition. A robot may look human, but this does not make it a human. It may sound human, but this, even in combination with looks does not make a robot or AI human. Compassion makes us human and a robot can never feel that. AI can be programmed to recreate the different responses a human may have to various emotions but those will likely be spotty. Furthermore, AI could never feel sympathy for any human simply because they cannot feel. They merely execute various coded commands. I understand that actual robotics and AI do not do something as simple as 'run codes' but if you were to strip down humanoid robots like the famous Sophia, it is all metal and electronics.

To be human is to feel emotions and be able to respond and console based on knowledge not dictated by generated words from a preprogrammed lexicon.Besides all that, a working heart and other vital organs also make us human, instead of an oil pump and various electric motors.

  2. Being human is more than just being made of flesh and having differences. I agree with Jeremy Berry, but I think an even bigger emotion that differentiates us is empathy. Humans have the ability to feel what others feel because they have went through the same thing as them. AI will and can never reach that because they have no emotions. As Jeremy Berry said, it can be coded with those commands, but will only use them when triggered.

The key about humans is what we feel for each other. This doesn't just include love or liking each other. It includes empathy, sympathy, love, hatred, jealousy, and lust. None if this is something AI could feel without being programmed to do it.
