Why isn't Anyone Doing Anything About the World's Atrocities? (AOTD)

As I was reading Amusing ourselves to death, by Neil Postman, I came across a passage where he mentioned how all the dangers in the world wouldn't have been publicized or known about, if the news never came to be. Terrible things such as fires, wars, murders, and love affairs happened in the time the book was written and are still currently happening to this day, not just nationwide but throughout the globe. Even with the news existing, some channels tend to water down or meddle with the actual story of what's going on. Also, the news mentioning what's going in the world, good or bad, doesn't necessarily mean that the viewers are going to do something about it. Usually when something is "out of sight out of mind" we as people tend to care less about the issue.

For example, the many murders that may still be going on in Sudan were publicized, but we Americans aren't doing anything about it. Why? There could be many reasons why we aren't doing anything to fix this issue, such as the fact that America is already dealing with its own issues. Helping another country is only going to dig its own hole of debt even deeper than it already is. When you get down to the core of the problem, people aren't doing anything so solve all the horrible things in the world, because it's a matter of convenience. It's every man for themselves and if that issue is going on in someone's own country, then it's that one country's responsibility to come up with a solution. Problems have a higher chance of being ignored when the solution is inconvenient, or if it doesn't apply to a certain person. Postman did a fabulous job with putting that relevant issue out into the spotlight, and addressing it.

  1. I like how you said that people tend to not care about world-wide news and the whole 'out of sight, out of mind' thing. Many people now just read articles to see what's happening and the real world problems aren't as talked about as sports and latest television drama because people know that they can't do anything about it. But they can't do anything about their sports team losing either.

  2. I was just thinking about this the other day. In school, I learned about the Holocaust, Slavery, Rwandan Genocide, and a multitude of other horrific historical events. I always thought, how could the world just watch innocent people suffer and not take action? It made me angry, but take a look at us. You, me, and everyone else have become an innocent bystander to these events and have yet found a way to help.
I think a lot of us want to help but don't know where to start. What organization is out there that's helping ? How can I donate to them ? How can I be more engaged with the solution ? It's easy to spread awareness about what's going on, but I have yet to see anyone spread awareness about how we can help out in whatever is going on.

  3. Its interesting that you bring up this point up because I hadn't thought of the connection. I always thought of technology being a terrible unreliable source, but maybe its because even if they did tell the truth, we would just sit here and feel bad rather than fix the issues.
