The Horrors of the Brave New World

While reading the Brave New World, I was taken aback by how different their society was with how it functioned and their morels. Everyday routines and common values that each of us hold are completely twisted around in their society like romance and family. They are practically non-existent which is hard to believe as we spend about ninety percent of our day with them. Society in the novel also revolves around a caste system in which people are born into and then altered genetically and molded into it while being quite young.

All of this took hold in the world after economic collapse and war (The Nine-Years War) which makes me wonder if such a thing could happen to our society. Last time our world had an economic collapse followed by war was the Great Depression and World War II. Unlike in the novel, our society didn't take an entire u-turn in ideals and lifestyle.

There was also the mentioning of getting rid of books and anything related to the past like historic monuments. This reminded me of the Fahrenheit 451 and the principle idea of book burning to get rid of the ability to think and learn. Not to mention, the Nazi burning of books who got rid of anything that might cause problems in their regime. In the novel's case, it was to bury the past for the new society. Imagine what would if our society were to end up like the novel after a catastrophic war with such differences?

  1. I agree with your points about society in the novel and liked how you compared it to other events in the past. In Fahrenheit 451 Guy Montag goes against societal norms and faces its consequences just like John. It shows that when both characters questioned and rebelled against their society it caused them tremendous amounts of suffering. When analyzing the different aspects of people's lives in BNW it's unimaginable that they live like that. We hold our families and morals close to us because of their importance in our lives and to live in a society without them would be horrifying.
