While browsing through the debates, one that I enjoyed was "Is Internet Addiction a Health Threat for Teenagers?" I believe it goes both ways. The internet can be quite helpful when we need help as in school work and just life in general. Boyd, the debater, states how we are kept inside because our parental figures see how unsafe our world is. That makes us teens turn to the only other form of connection to the world we have. Being on the internet connects to the world we can’t see.
Boyd says “This is why many of our youth turn to technology. They aren’t addicted to the computer; they’re addicted to interaction, and being around their friends.” We’re addicted to way more than just interaction and being around friends. We’re talking about gaming, shopping, and social media. I’m aware we use social media to socialize and talk to our friends ,but we get caught up in people’s lives who we don’t even know personally. We follow and set up notifications or subscribe to their channel to constantly be updated on their lives when us teens our trying to figure what our purpose in this world is.
Do you believe internet addiction is a health threat to teens or is it a main part of our lives that benefits us? The internet allows us to connect with others from all around the world ,but some are on it excessively. I’m curious to see your opinions on this.

I do believe internet addiction is a health threat to teens. As you mentioned, kids have so many online role models that they've never even met. For all they know, they could be completely different people in real life. These unrealistic expectations that we see on the internet are unhealthy and lead to insecurities that could be avoided without the internet and social media.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with the belief that internet addiction can be damaging to teens. The internet gives us access to so many other people and their lives that I think we can get carried away. We see social media personalities living such extravagant lifestyles we want to be like them. However I also believe that there is some amazing content on social media that can help us with school such as Khan Academy. I feel that as long as we moderate out time spent on social media then we can have a healthy balance.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with your statement that we get addicted to far more than just interaction between our friends. Yes although we often use the internet to communicate with anybody and everybody, there is much more offered to us. Like you stated, we get caught up in other peoples lives wanting updates for every little thing that occurs in their lives. This may result in us losing track of our own teenage lives and if we think about it, maybe this is what transforms the internet into a problem rather than a resource.
ReplyDeleteThe internet is a great way to socialize with friends and family that you do not get to see as often. In addition, the internet often helps many students with homework or lessons that we didn't quiet understand in class. However, we do catch ourselves constantly watching and checking on people who don't really know who we are. It all just depends how well we control ourselves while we are on the internet.
