When reading my long reads, "Can we stop AI from outsmarting humanity" and "Smart talking: are our devices threatening our privacy", I asked myself: Where is the future of technology headed? I am genuinely concerned about the future economy. When technology advances it will be hard for uneducated or lower class people to get a job and thrive. These people will get left behind because a machine can do their job easier and faster. Also, many companies will use these machines as a way to save money from their already multi- billionaire businesses. For example the article, "New McDonalds In Phoenix Run Entirely By Robots" explains what our future may look like. This can cause extreme levels of poverty and homelessness.
So I raise the question: Should we stop advancing technology? Personally I think society would benefit if we did. I know this is a far fetched idea but I would propose that we limit the amount of machines in the workplace so that there is a possibility of jobs in the future. I want my grandkids to be able to support themselves in the future and have an equal chance. Technology is so advanced that we already have a lot of the work done for us. We can get access to information and help with a push of a few buttons on our phones. Although these perks are good I don't want to get to the point where we do none of the work ourselves.
On the other hand, if our society does become taken over by technology we could live like the people in the movie Wall-E. That society had no work ethic and the civilians could lounge around and enjoy life. The machines and robots did all the work for them which could allow for leisure their whole lives. Some people may argue that if that's where the future is headed then maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

ReplyDeleteI like how you mentioned the people from the movie Wall-E because it shows the possible repercussions of technology taking over. However, I feel that technology will only take over if we allow it to. Humans are the ones producing the new technological items and have the power to control and prevent them from taking over.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it may sound pleasant for the more lazy people, most humans are selfish and arrogant. By this, I mean that humans like the pride in doing things themselves, so they probably won't allow technology to do everything for them. Our planet isn't in the best condition as it is, so adding even more pollution and draining resources with technology is only going to damage our society. The world in Wall-E was deserted, looked apocalyptic and was probably depicted that way to show the viewers what it would be like, allowing technology to take over. Your blog was thorough and very interesting
I understand your concept of technlogy advancing to the extent of it possibly dominating human life over time. In the sci-fi novel Fahrenheit 451, technology’s the exceedingly common and valuable use in their society. Four wall screen TVs, focusing on the radio in subway stations, and television is considered relatives to avoid interaction from outside, including partners. There is possibility machinery can prevent employment, so the government provides jobs and homes to continue their technological world. Afterall, the use of human invention is meant to benefit the people. Therefore, we should continue advancing our knowledge of technology and understand the disadvantages to prevent the domination of technology.
ReplyDeleteI like how you use the movie Wall-E as example. Over time people got lazier and fat. Work ethic got very slow. So that's a good example. They are many pros and cons on advancing technology. It's helping us in so many categories like education or to find a cure to cancer. I think we all just getting to caught up in it. My solution is to manage technology better. Just because a robot can place an order as a cashier, doesn't mean it should be invented.
