Social Media In Marketing and Our Privacy

It may not come as a surprise that social media is constantly influencing everything that we do. From our apps to our web searches, information is constantly being shoved down our throats. While my sister sends me a picture of some shoes she thought I would like, I see an ad on Instagram promoting them. As I finish watching the new trailer for The Lion King I turn to Facebook only to discover that Pandora created a line of jewelry inspired by the movie. Ads like these are personalized to our own interests in order to get us to buy them and it definitely works. What we should be worried about is our privacy. The fact that my YouTube searches influence my Recommended Amazon Picks is worrying to say the least. Who knows what else these big brand corporate companies are tapped into. What could they possibly be doing with our information that is not so blatantly obvious as advertisements?

  1. I agree with you, I have noticed the same problems happening on my devices. But in a way, is this a good thing? For example, I texted my mom a photo of this jacket that I screen shotted from someone's Instagram post. Less than a week later, I saw an advertisement for that same jacket on google. The jacket was unique and I wouldn't have been able to find it, if not for ad.
What I am trying to say is that technology is providing yet another tool for us. I mean, I don't want someone listening on my private conversations. But I have nothing to hide, so I don't mind someone (or something) helping me.

  2. I agree with you about what you say. When I look through a clothing account on Instagram, the next day it’s promoting me their products. I sometimes wonder how it knows, and feel unsure about my privacy while using my phone.
I don’t want anyone to be watching my every move that I do while i’m on my phone. Not that I’m doing anything bad, I just think it’s really creepy that the things you look through on social media can pop up as a promotion.
