I finished reading Brave New World and it was unlike any other novel I have read before. It was difficult for me to understand it at first, but I analyzed it more, and now I am able to comprehend it better. There are only some parts that are still confusing to me, such as how they specifically made the babies. In the novel, they are genetically experimenting with these infants and are taught specific things. I believe they are modifying the embryos of these babies. However, I do not agree with the fact that they modify their brains. These infants, depending on which caste they force them into, have limited mental processes. Also, there was not anything they could do to get out of their caste. You are treated the way you are, you have specific abilities, and your thought process is messed with, all depending on the caste you are put into. According to the Director in the novel, he believes this is the best thing to do in that society. In the eyes of the Director, it prevents people from anger, which could turn into rebellion. In addition, it provokes people to think a certain way. For example, they know that the infants are being experimented on, and they all believe it is fine. On another topic, censorship is recognized, as we see one of the characters being exiled for writing a different hypnotic rhyme of his own. Moreover, people use soma, a narcotic drug, anytime they feel some sort of unhappiness or frustration. As infants, they are taught all these ways, and as adults they still believe that the lives they are living are full of happiness and that they have great lives. In the beginning, one of the main characters saw that this was not the life he wanted to live; he was individualistic. He did not think like most of society and that is why he stood out in the novel. The ultimate goal was for everyone to be happy in their limited roles, staying within those boundaries are important. Furthermore, there was so much social conditioning in this novel through isolating and programming. To bring this all together, I believe Aldous Huxley wrote this novel to predict how our society will eventually become like this. With our technology advancing very quickly, it is not a wonder why Huxley would write this. This was a difficult, crazy, thought-provoking novel to read, but as a whole, it all comes down to this thought: could this fiction novel potentially become a reality in the future?
