The article, "Can We Stop AI From Outsmarting Humanity" by Mara Hvistendahl, focuses on the concerns that Tallinn has for AI, and how he tries to prevent his fears from becoming a reality. He believes that AI being able to carry out multiple functions will eventually lead to it dominating man kind.
Though I believe that AI taking over would not happen, I can see a few reasons why people think it could. If AI learns how to do complex tasks, it could lead to humans having less control over what it knows it each time AI learns to do something new. However, I feel that this could be prevented. Artificial Intelligence is built by humans, therefore we can control what, and how many abilities it has. Without humans, artificial intelligence wouldn't exist on its own. Despite the worries that it will outsmart humanity, man kind still builds them, because they can be very useful.
I believe that we can still have artificial intelligence without the worry that it will take over. I feel that machines can only be as smart as we let them be. I don't know to what point AI could reach, but it can only get there if people allow it to. The thought of AI taking over is not enough for me to ignore its benefits, and begin to fear it. This is simply my opinion, but I would like to see what other peoples' thoughts are on this issue.

I really like your views on this article. I myself believe that AI could possibly take over if the right safety measures are not taken. I feel that is Tallinn's biggest fear is that they will move forward in creating the super intelligent AI and not be able to predict what it will do. In the article talks of having an ‘off button’ are very important but it is not as easy because of the endless possibilities that could result in a very disappointing end. Although humans would be the ones creating the super intelligent AI they might not be able to stop it especially if it becomes smarter than them. I feel their thoughts on trying to make it so AI can learn and understand human values would be the best way to prevent any accidents.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree that it is unlikely that AI will take over. We build what we know how to then innovate more ideas. Most companies build things people will buy to make our lives easier and AI is the type of thing that will help us. If we build what we know, it will only know what we tell it to.
ReplyDeleteBut that does not mean it won't or can't grow on its own. Think of how children can learn things without being taught. Even now, if we are given a task to complete but no instructions, we will figure out a way to do it. But there are many ways this could go. They can develop in a malicious manner and try to outsmart and overpower us, or be benevolent and work alongside us.
I don't think we should be fearful either. I view this more as a silly what if type of joke, similar to a zombie apocalypse. I think if it were something to fear, it would be in the media much more, and I have heard nothing like this until I started the summer homework. Even if it were to really happen, there are many intelligent computer hackers and programmers that can create a virus or some other way to destroy the AI.
