The Dangers of Technology

Since our summer homework is focused on technology, we are getting many different perspectives on how others think it affects us. It makes me question if technology is worth it. I have been focusing on the debates recently and there are articles about A.I. taking over and how harmful the internet and video games are to our health. One that I chose for myself is about texting and driving. New electronics may be entertaining and fun, but they can also put us at risk.

A majority of us are also taking APUSH, which is focused on Native Americans and Columbus. I wonder if life back in the time before Columbus came to America was better. It was much simpler. They did not have roads and cars and fancy screens. They only had the people and other tribes around them. They had a large community and treasured their family. If the technology Europeans used to sail here was never invented, our lives would not exist. The world would be tremendously different. There would be hunters and farmers that only have to worry about feeding their tribes or families. Everyone would have their own job that directly benefits one another. There would be no world wars or threats from other countries. No deaths from reckless behavior. Technology has its upsides, but are the downsides worth it?

  1. I think that technology has positive and negative attributes, depending how it is exploited. Artificial intelligence serves as a pioneer in technological and scientific progress, not to mention how much aid it can provide towards mankind, such as in disease prevention. From the Internet to computers to phones, technology propels humans towards a fast paced world without the hassle behind simple tasks. While it is part of the engine that drives society, this electronic instrument can produce harmful ramifications as well. Technology can be an initiator of complex societal issues, such as paranoia about one's appearance, or reckless behavior , such as driving while texting. However, technology is still a necessity, and while it does create problems at times, it symbolizes progression in our history, providing help and information when we need it most.

  2. I understand your points on how technology shows how far we've come, but that relates to you saying it causes paranoia about a person's appearance. If you focus on how much more advanced or better we are now, you can't see how the past was also great.

For my example of the Native Americans, they were not exposed to diseases that are lethal until the Europeans came here, so there was no need for technology that eliminates diseases. My thought process when making my post was "What would our lives be like if we were living how they did back then? What if we had the same everything? If we were just farmers that loved our simple tasks and worked and spent time with our family all day?"

I agree with all of your points, however, I was not speaking of how technology would affect us if it disappeared from our lives today. I was wondering what the world would be like if it was never made in the first place.

  3. While I agree with some of your points, I would like to point out that tribes did not lie in peace. During their time, wars may not have been world wide but they were more common and more brutal. Native Americans, like other tribes around the world, often went to war with neighboring tribes. It was a natural instinct to be territorial and they felt that it was in their, or their god's, best interest to kill their neighboring tribes, their family members, or themselves. I think common technology, scientific discovery, and media helped to create a different moral that values the human life more than the will of the gods.

  4. I, for one, am very glad for the technologies we have today, especially air conditioning. Our world has always been a restless world, one of conquest and death. Technology has not changed this, it has merely upped the scale. So, while our lives without technology might have been simpler, it does not erase the fact that they still had the same problems we have today. In my opinion, technology creates bigger and more dangerous problems, especially if compared to simple lives without technology, but that same technology also provides a way for us to solve those problems, both big and small, with a greater speed than ever before.

  5. I am aware of the positives and negatives that come with technology. I do not necessarily believe that technology has created a more chaotic world, because have always had problems and wars even before technology took a huge leap, but it has had a few contributions. Like the example you gave about texting and driving, this wasn't as big of a problem when we didn't have smartphones but with technology it has become a greater problem. So yes, I do agree that technology is dangerous but it has also caused some major improvements. For example, experts are able to create more advanced medicines with the help of technology. These are just a few examples out of the many pros and cons of technology but I do believe the downsides are worth it.

  6. I think technology has amazing benefits in this world today. With technology, we are able to do research on many things like illnesses and study to cure many diseases. However, technology has developed into bad habits like texting and driving, which has had thousands of people. People have these habits where when they hear the notification bell, they instantly want to see what the notification was. Though technology has given us many benefits, I just do not think it is worth killing thousands of people each year.

  7. I see what you are saying but I don't believe technology made the world more chaotic. Their were already wars back then, like tribe wars or when the Europeans came to America when the natives were already their. It was already wars happening. But some wars have been started base on technology. We also united some nations because of technology. But technology is a huge part in the modern world today. It benefit us in so many ways like in education or doctors finding a cure to diseases. Their will always be hatred in this world even if you take technology away.
