Technology in AOTD

Before I started to begin reading, Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman, I expected the book to have a protagonist like all the other books I have read. This book is very different from all the other books I have read because it does not contain a protagonist, so I was not excited to read the rest of it after the first chapters.
However after finishing the whole story, I understand what Postman was trying to explain about technology. Though this book was written in the 1980’s for only television to be the only technology, he does make great points that we do in today’s world. For instance, in order for us to watch television or a program, they must have something entertaining like our favorite celebrity for us to get hooked on the program. Also, we are adjusted to the world of news today and forget the connection of the past. In my opinion, I think it’s pretty sad to see our world like this for technology.

  1. I too agree that Postman is trying to explain to us technology, but I also think that he is trying to warn us. Since technology has now become a great part of our lives we now don't give books attention. We get caught up in the internet and television that we only dedicate our time to our electronic devices. Therefore, he knew that technology would keep us away from the knowledge that books had to offer, and tried to warn us.

  2. Nonfiction does not have a protagonist, or a plot. It's not a story. It's a different genre altogether, and presents different challenges for readers.
