Never Content

The ending of Brave New World made me think about just how unfortunate the Savage, John, was.  I mean, he wanted to go to London with Bernard and Linda because of the great stories Linda told him and because he felt alone in the tribe and secluded, but when he got to London he felt the complete opposite.  There was so much to do it overwhelmed him, then his mother died. All of this happening made him want solitude once more, just to be alone again and not be so busy and to be in such a crowded place and he finally got that.  Because he never changed his ways and preferred to keep his own opinions, even when he finally got the solitude he wanted, people found him. It was because he stuck out.

This makes me think, no matter where he went, he would be found, purely because he is so different from them.  It only takes one person to look at him and think, wow, he is different, what is he doing, why is he doing that to himself, etc., and then they go tell someone, then all of a sudden people from all around want to see.  Just like that, his peace and alone time was taken away and he was bombarded with crowds and the press and even the girl he thought he loved came, the girl who let him down and destroyed his dreams of experiencing actual love.  All of this must have taken him on a huge emotional roller coaster, and he just got tired of it all and didn't know how to deal with it, thus that was how he ended, his way out, suicide. He never felt content his whole life.

  1. Yes Leo I agree that he has never felt fully content. In both of the societies that John was put into he had complications. He has been different and never really "fitted in" his whole life. But at the end of the book John actually participated in the activities he despised. He woke up and realized he had taken soma and was apart of an "orgy porgy". I believe that when he came to this realization he simply couldn't live with himself.
