Limiting Internet for Teens

Before I started to read the articles I thought most if not all of the debaters would be against the internet and would advocate to limiting or allowing no internet access at all. However, I was wrong, Chris Bergman, the author of "Don't Limit Your Teen's Screen Time", thought differently. Bergman shares his experiences with video games and the results of a small experiment he conducted. When he was younger his parents would limit his screen time and this would make him want to binge game even more when he was at friends' houses. This got me thinking about many things such as when we have too much of something we get tired of it faster, like when Bergman conducted his experiment his children played outside more often when they had the chance to socialize. Unlike his nephew who has limited screen time would use every opportunity to watch television or play games and wouldn't socialize with his cousins when he was at their houses.

Also Chris Bergman also explained that video games helped him find his passion in programming. He also shared that he has make some lifelong friends from video games and that even two of them ended up marrying each other. The internet isn't a bad thing and limiting it can often lead to teens developing an addition to the internet. Furthermore, I know from experience that being on the internet for more than a few hours often ends with me getting bored and doing something else.

Overall, I think that limiting the internet too much can lead to teens desiring it more and can cause the opposite effect from the intended purpose.

  1. It has occurred to me also that when I am on my phone for a long time, i get tired of it also. For some people, the internet might be a safe place for them where they can express themselves. Some might just be too shy to do it in person. I personally believe that the internet is not always bad.

    1. I also believe that the internet isn't as bad as it may seem. In fact, I think it's how people use the internet that makes it bad. For example, we can use the internet to research things for projects, but at the same time there are people who use the internet to cyber bully other people. I personally think that the internet is a tool, and how we use it determines whether it is good or not.

  2. I completely agree with your argument, because it's a proven fact that we desire the most limited things in life. When we have plentiful amounts of a substance, we don't crave it like if it was deprived from us. In this case the internet can be a very addictive thing and the more we use it, the stronger our connection to it gets. We desire it and sometimes even get withdrawals when it's taken away from us. When we have the opportunity to use the internet as much as we please we won't have these withdrawals. Your blog was well thought out and I enjoyed reading it personally.

  3. I very much agree with you in that limiting the internet for anyone, especially young people, could lead to them wanting it even more. From personal experience, I have also found that when my parents tell me to get off the internet, I suddenly want to be on it more versus when I’m playing games or on social media without a limit I tend to get bored much easier. I also agree when you say that you will be more social because I have seen how being limited may make you less social.
