The Human Rights Watch Organization states that approximately 31 migrant deaths in US custody occurred from May 2012 to June 2016, the time of the Obama administration. Of these 31, 7 were reportedly caused by substandard medical care and inadequate detention standards. In other words, 7 people died because of lack of medical care, due to poor funding and/or under staffing, or rules not being followed. Considering these 7, and maybe more, deaths were preventable if proper action had been taken. This sounds like a good reason for retraining and redistribution of funding, but none likely came.
On the other hand, NBC did an analysis of federal data and found that 24 migrants have died since the beginning of the Trump administration, roughly 3 years. Many of the deaths occurred under the same circumstances, ill prepared medical staff and ill trained guards disregarding rules. However, all that has been in the news recently is “The Crisis At The Border.”
I'm not saying that there is not a border crisis, because there is, but I am just pointing out the fact that this has been going on since 2012 and even as far back as 2004 when they first began collecting data on the migrant holding facilities. The only thing different now is the administration and the need for media to put out stories that unnecessarily bash the president.

Immigration and the problems surrounding it are not new to our country. They've been around since (and even before maybe) the U.S. became a superpower of the world and it became the "place to be" for those living in undesirable situations.
ReplyDeleteThe reason it's gotten so much attention is because the president has used his platform to make this issue relevant.
Personally (and this is very subjective), I believe that he specifically made it a major issue in his campaign because he wanted to specifically tap into a certain demographic that the policy would appeal to for votes when in reality, as it can be reflected in what he's done as president, he hasn't really done a whole lot in stuff related to the border until recently.
There’s always been a border crisis between the Mexico and U.S border. We see on the news everyday where men, women, and even children being cramped into small cells where there are higher risk of them getting sick.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the Trump administration has not really done nothing for this issue. However ever since the news has told the over 20 deaths of children, men, and women, the Trump administration have somewhat helped with this issue.
There has always been an issue at the border. But adding onto what Liam said, the main reason we have heard so much about the problems at the border is because that was one of Trump's trade marks. He attacked these people from the beginning, and that is why it has been in the news recently. There is also plenty of horrendous problems that are happening at the border that no media is covering.
