As I was scrolling through the articles on room for debate, I couldn’t help but notice the article “Is our world becoming safer?". The reason why I find this article so essential to us is, because of the fact that this is the world we live in and we should always be fully aware of the possible lurking dangers that we can encounter throughout our lives.
Although there hasn't been a major war at a global scale for over 74 years (not including the cold war) there have been multiple civil wars, genocides, or just plain wars in general throughout third world countries. Some examples would be the atrocities that just occurred in Sudan, or the civil war in Central Africa between the Christians and the Muslims or even the more frequent terrorist attacks. All this just alludes to us finding ourselves in a dangerous world.
According to Mauro Guillen, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton's school statistic's, terrorist attacks have sky rocketed since 2001-2007 and is at its new peak. Another great example of how our world is a dangerous place is literally in the places where we go to seek education, schools. In just 2018 their were at least 52 school shootings that took place in the US, in other words one school shooting per week which is completely absurd.
Not to mention if we are looking at a global scale, there are 15,000 nuclear weapons in the hands of other countries. The leading country being Russia with a nuclear arsenal of 7,000 followed by the US with 6,800. This just screams global extinction especially with tensions being high between Russia and the US.
On a lighter note there has been some reforms that do make our world a better place such as tensions between the US and North Korea have somewhat lowered or the Sudan crisis being put to a halt. However it always appears that there is always more belligerency occurring than benevolence.
Overall I don't believe that our world will even come close to being predominantly safe due to the vast amounts of disputes countries have with one another and other conflicts being on the arise. Besides history has a way of repeating itself.

Overall I agree with a lot of the points that you brought to the table such how their seems to be an overall increase in school shootings alone in 2018. I also agree with the fact that you pointed out that just because we haven't had a "World War" in 74 years (if you don't include the Cold War) that humans don't still carry that animosity toward one another and not to mention the violent acts that still go on like in Syria. The only thing I kind of disagree with is your statements on nuclear weapons. The reason will still keep them armed is because of M.A.D aka Mutually Assured Destruction, although I do see how the system is flawed it still works and if it ain't broke don't fix it. However we as a society will continue to try and make this world a better and safer place, so while it might not be as safe as we want, we can sure try.
ReplyDeleteI can agree with many of your solid points that describe the dangers in the world that are growing. For example the situation with the amount of nukes every country has. The reason everyone has such a destructive weapon is due to the ideology that if one single country had such a power it would rule over all other countries and even the world. By multiple countries having this weapon they aren't able hold as much power, let alone threaten each other. I also like how you were able to bring up our history to reference the atrocities that happened and to connect them with present ideas. With many civil wars and terrorist acts in the past, we can expect to see them in the future due to the many differences that set races and ideologies apart. However, more time can also be used to understand each other as a species to prevent such catastrophes in the future.
ReplyDeleteIn the beginning of your post you mention that we should always be aware of potential dangers but is that anyway to live? If you are constantly worried about the bad in the world, how can you be optimistic that the future could be better. While wars will always happen, and school shootings are a tragedy that needs to be dealt with, the world has been made safer in many ways. As an example, one of the biggest killers of teens and young adults are car accidents, but with new technologies that help cars stop himself in case of emergencies, many lives can be saved.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree with Jenee. Like you said at the beginning of your post that we should be aware of potential dangers and always fully aware of lurking dangers. How can we live our life fully? We can’t let potential things stop us from doing what we like. We can’t be scared and worried about different kinds of dangers. Although many bad does happen in the world it’s still okay to be aware of situations.
