Artificial Intelligence, a Menace to Our Society?

Our world and society has come such a long way from thousands of years ago. In one of the Room for Debates, "Is Artificial Intelligence Taking Over Our Lives," it is argued over whether or not AI can actually benefit us. To begin, I believe there are some good aspects of AI. Helping to aid patients and keep them company when a hospital is short on staff. Helping to clear up traffic jams in really busy cities. AI is a relatively new innovation, so it can branch out to several things.

In my opinion, AI is only good when absolutely necessary. For example, when there's a shortage on staff as I stated above, helping with simple jobs/activities that humans don't want to do because the pay or time isn't worth it or it's unsafe, and ridding the world of pollution. After all this, I don't find AI to be very appealing.

We humans can discover, create, innovate, and more. It's really fascinating and amazing at how much we've achieved over the years. However, as AI becomes more common, and they become able to do more things us humans can do, do we even have to live anymore? Once AI is capable of doing what we can do and more, and they begin to do everything for us, are we even humans? Being human to me is being able to do the things that I want to do myself. I don't need to have someone or something like AI doing everything for me. I'm not fond of the idea of turning into some mindless blob with AI doing everything for me. The more tasks we hand over to AI to complete, as mundane as they may be, we set ourselves up to be less innovative and creative.

Furthermore again, as AI becomes more common, there's a high chance it can get into the hands of the wrong people. Almost every single thing created by man has somehow gotten into the hands of the wrong people and has somehow turned into something dangerous. It can be just an everyday kitchen appliance to nuclear weapons. Can you imagine when AI becomes so high tech that we can't even control it anymore? What happens then? There's always a danger to things being created, so is it really worth all the risks? I've only named a couple of dangers that are possible, there is so much more threatening things that can happen so keep that in mind.                      - Emily Chang

  1. I completely agree with your opinion on the AI doing everything for us. I also want to do stuff on my own. I would rather be independent than have to rely on someone else. I prefer to not be relied on by others as well. I think we should live separately and be our own happiness then come together and share it, not depend on someone or something else for our own happiness. If the AI does everything for us, we wouldn't have the happiness we feel with every little thing we accomplish. We would, like you said, become "mindless blobs" and we would not have anything to be proud of.

Furthermore, you mentioning kitchen appliances reminds me of crime TV shows that I watch where the victim of a burglary uses their household appliances as protection. Maybe this can be another use for the AI. We live in an unsafe world and having a robot to protect us might not be so bad. They can be put in places of establishment to fend off robbers and protect property or in neighborhoods to prevent muggings and burglaries.

    1. Thank you for giving your opinion Aniya! It most definitely feels really nice and uplifting when we become happy after everything we accomplish. There are times when it's a big accomplishment like an academic award, or just the little things like cooking a good meal for your hardworking parents. AI can never take away these moments of pure joy, and I hope humans can continue to admire the things in life that makes us ecstatic.

The world for sure has never always been 100% safe. There's always a danger in going out to places or even staying at home. AI can certainly be created to help protect us from any burglaries and such. Although, there's always going to be someone who can hack AI. Here in reality, there are good and bad people. So despite the good intentions we have for AI, there's always a chance it can be used for the exact opposite.

I really enjoyed reading your comment and I can tell you read my whole blog post entirely instead of skimming through it. Thank you again!

  2. I really like your perspective on not wanting to rely completely on AI to do everything for you. I do not want to become lazy and allow a robot to do my bidding. I want to be able to live on my own. If people begin to use AI for everything, and one day it all stops working I don't want to be worried. If it all broke down, I want to know how to cook, clean, and perform ordinary tasks on my own.

I also agree with what Aniya said on how else AI could be helpful. Placing artificial intelligence in neighborhoods, and other places that contain a vast amount of people could be helpful. I think it would be ideal to have a robot to protect people from intruders, and other cases where someone can get hurt. I think it would lower the amount of injured people who witness dangerous situations.

    1. Thank you Jasmine for commenting! Being able to do things on our own is what makes us human. We can cook, clean, and perform tasks just fine by ourselves. We are smart enough and knowledgeable enough to know what's appropriate to do and not to do. AI shouldn't be used to complete everything for us, and I fear that may happen as the world becomes more immersed in technology.

Society could definitely benefit from AI in this sense. Helping to fend off intruders, congested areas, and other cases where a person is likely to get injured. However, as I stated above in my reply to Aniya, there's a chance AI can be hacked. No matter how good intentioned our reason was to creating AI, there's always going to be some person with malicious intent that will change its purpose. It's sad how society has turned even more dangerous as our technological advancements greaten. Hopefully, as AI becomes more common, it will mostly be used only for the well being of humans.

Thank you again for your thoughts and opinions!

  3. In your post, you asked, are we even human if we create AI capable of doing what we can do and more? I believe yes we are, but what I also think you mean to ask by posing this question is if advanced AI is created to do what we are capable and not capable of then does it take away from being human and make us a much lesser “being” (if AI were ever to be considered that). I believe no because humans are capable of emotion such as empathy and sympathy which I believe to be very hard, if not, impossible to perfectly recreate in AI (unless you were to place human consciousness in a robot, which would that even be considered AI anymore?). No matter what AI may be capable of, we still have something it may never have, emotion.

  4. Like you stated above, I agree with you completely on we should be able to complete our own tasks and not become helpless. We should not have to get to the point were machines have to do everyone of our daily task. I get it if you need a little help around the house because you are busy, but don't rely on it 24/7. Right now we should enjoy how we have life currently before technology takes over our lives in the future.
