I just was reading an article from the room for Debate that presented the idea of using a phone app as a cure for depression. The debaters who are in favor of apps like these present ideas that it now allows victims of depression and anxiety to get a little help or relief outside of brick and mortar establishments. While I agree the intent is good to find a way to help people with conditions like this outside in public life I disagree with the way they intend on going about doing it. I think that by placing the source to help with the depression of a device that's proven to get you addicted and perhaps even more depressed. A more reasonable way I think to handle depression is to give people increased access to therapists and specialists who can help treat their conditions instead of providing them with another tool that could possibly enhance their depression.

Possessing an easy, affordable app to help with depression sounds like a great idea at first. Then you mention that the app is proven to get you addicted and even more depressed. I also believe that talking to an actual therapist and just trusted people in your life is more effective rather than using an app that is proven to make it worse.
ReplyDeleteNot only can it enhance depression, but since it is an app they need to find a way to market to people. Basically profiting off mental illness. I believe that there was a situation like this last year where an app called "better help" paid YouTubers to help promote their app claiming that there are certified therapist that can provide you 24/7 service.
ReplyDeleteUltimately the app was exposed to be a major scam, that profited off depression. It sounds great for an app to help you during your lowest times, unfortunately it has its downsides.
I agree with your point, therapists and specialist should be more easily accessible for people with mental problems. If someone were to use apps for mental issues such as depression, it could lead them to go on more apps that may have a worse influence to their mental.
