Outliers Summary (1-50)

Malcolm Gladwell begins the first two chapters by explaining how most famous athletes are selected to be drafted to the professionals Those who are born in the first three months of the year have a higher chance of being selected rather than someone who was born later than March. He also specifies that most descriptions of how people perceive success are "profoundly wrong" and while most public figures may have a special talent, the secret to their success has a chance of being from a hidden advantage. An example of which from be a family inheritance or an economically stable household. Gladwell brings forward multiple analogies, one example being when he mentions how the tallest tree in a forest not only came from a good seed but also grew in better sunlight and healthier soil than the surrounding trees.

  1. I have never really thought of success in that way before. Now that this view has come to my attention, I agree that there are many factors that come into play when a person becomes successful. Usually when I think of someone doing something great in life, I think about that person's talent and dedication to the task at hand. Now that I have thought about it some more, a person's environment and the people in their life have a significant impact on what they achieve in life. When someone has support from relatives and friends, it gives a sense that others agree with what that person is doing. In contrast, if someone is hoping to achieve something without the support of others, it may be more difficult as they have to find their own motivation for continuing their objective.

  2. This interpretation of success is very interesting and its something to think about. In my opinion I think it is very important to make connections wherever you go. Your summary supports my opinion because success not only comes from hard work and passion but also from relations or connections.

  3. Whenever I had thought about success before you're surrounding and what you grow up never really was brought to my attention. Although now that you mention it , it seems like something that actually plays a very important role. Before I always just thought that it was about the person's work ethic and dedication to how much the wanted the success to happen. But now I realize that someone's surroundings and support system plays a very important role because this is usually what shapes a person.

  5. It's crazy how your supporters play a significant role when it comes to your path of success. Someone who's more matured in a sport or academically wise will have an advantage than someone who birthday is late and is just starting their maturity progression. These type of parents gives their child an head start, so the chance of them not becoming successful are very slim. I liked the example you grab from the book about the tree being in a better environment to grow and have an healthier soil compared to other trees. That something you can connect to the world with. The more support you have, there's a higher chance of you becoming successful.
