Atomic Habits Summary
Small atomic habits don't make a big differences in the beginning but over time it slowly leads to exponential growth that makes a massive differences. Habits over time also changes your beliefs about yourself in return you start getting results you might not even have been able to imagine. Also rather then trying to get an outcome first start with what kind of person you want to be. Then ask questions about what kind of person you want to be when faced with a difficult situation. For instances, "what would a kind person do? or "what would a hard worker do". By asking these question if gives you a chance to think about what to do and eventually you'll become a hard worker or kind person because that is now your identity. Although goals work it is often better to look at the system or the process to achieving your goals instead of trying to get an outcome or result.

I have recently thought about improvement prior to reading this post. I was also thinking about the process occurring when ever someone is trying to reach a goal. It would be amazing to understand and achieve everything on your first attempt, but this is simply not a reality. There has been times where I was not able to successfully accomplish something the first time I tried. I became very frustrated at failing, yet I was determined to eventually achieve that skill. One example is improving my writing for essays. I have not written an essay where I thought there was no room for improvement. Having thought about the process and not the result, I realize that I have better pieces of writing than in previous years. Slowly I notice previous work and I see the differences. Though is not the biggest improvement, it gets better with time and practice. I agree that it is better to look at the process instead of worrying about the result because practice is what will eventually lead to the outcome.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Clear on his claim of changing focus to the system rather than on the goal in order to actually see results and develop habits that will be beneficial. I do not know if you recall, but this was a statement made by Clear: "Winners and losers have the same goal", it helped me see how a final goal shouldn't be the main focus. After all, everyone wants to get first place, but that doesn't mean everyone will. However, I don't think we should rid and forget about an overarching goal, because that is what motivates us. Working on our specific systems help us improve but the end goal helps us keep our mind set. Also, I'd like to point out that this is just the first part of the book and I find myself enjoying it more as I continue to read. However, I do want to say I feel that the author is making habits seem too easy and overly simple, when in reality this is more of a complex topic that isn't fixed with just a few adjustments.
