Deep Work Summary
In our book club meeting we discussed the definition of what Deep Work was. We analyzed the text and what the definition was in the beginning of the novel and came to a conclusion that Deep Work is the ability to stay focused on one task while being able to work efficiently and at a great quality. This is going to be required in order to be successful in today's modern society. There are also reasons as to why deep work habits are becoming increasingly rare and that is because of the development of technology that is creating more and more distractions. These distractions cause us to lose focus on our task which causes us to do shallow work which is the opposite of deep work. Shallow work is the ability to complete a task, but it is not anywhere near great quality because you are performing the task while not being focused at the same time. Deep work is the main habit needed to be successful in life especially in today's society.

I can agree with the author that there are two types of works, deep and shallow, which are significantly different. Personally I have days when I submit "shallow" work assignments to my teachers because I am focused on another task rather than the one before me. One of the ways I avoid this is setting my mentality to, "This is important and my teacher is expecting the most of me on this one assignment". Before I begin the task at hand I make sure to keep distractions away by muting messages, closing all unnecessary tabs, and closing my door. I find all of these to work most of the time in order for me to produce high quality work for my classes.
ReplyDeleteMy whole life is an example of having developed habits that have made me turn in and produce shallow work. I for one have a horrible habit of finishing my work in the class periods hours before it is due. This has made me not only taken time out from actively learning in class that day, but also made me create work that isn't at my full potential. Honesty, I even believe it is the reason I have trouble focusing on one specific topic, since I am so used to multi-tasking. Also, I do agree that Deep work is a very important habit we need to develop in today's world, since competition in work or school is more competitive than ever. At the end of the day, the winners and losers will be distinguished by their ability to not be distracted.
