By reaching 6 hours of sleep your REM is finally activated. During REM your body rejuvenates in a chemical bath, restarting your body and feeling fresh. However if you are interrupted during REM you tend to be more tired and 10-30% more physically exhausted. With that being said, sleep is extremely pro active and helps your body drastically.

Why We Sleep Summary Week 2
In chapters 3-6 Walker explains to us how a vast majority of ancient tribes had a different sleeping schedule compared to modern day Americans. Ancient tribes would sleep periodically by taking at least a two hour nap throughout the day and finishing off the day with at least 6 more hours of sleep. This method proves to be a more efficient form of staying energized throughout the day, thus they were able to accomplish more rigorous activities.

I would completely agree that our sleeping schedules are not as effective as they could be. My sister is currently studying abroad in Spain, where all shops and businesses are closed from around 3 to 6p.m. for "siesta." During this time, everyone leaves school and work to go home and take a nap, hence the name "siesta." My sister says that she has adjusted to this new schedule with a built-in nap and feels more energized throughout the day. I think that it's a brilliant idea and it puts an emphasis on the lack of knowledge and care that Americans have about the value of sleep.

When I read that part in the book I was very disappointed that our sleeping schedule no longer consists of naps because of our busy lives. We are caught up in our daily tasks that we don't have enough time in our day to take a nap even though it's an essential to feel energized. Since naps help us feel more energized I believe that society should promote naps, which not only help people feel empowered but can possibly help those with health issues.
ReplyDeleteI have a few questions about the book and your summary. What ancient peoples was the book referring to? If REM starts at 6 hours into sleep, how long does it last for? What chemicals does your body release during sleep?
ReplyDeleteThis sounds very interesting. We do have to realize that mostly all of our sleeping schedules are messed up. That's probably why preschoolers and kindergartners have so much more energy since they get a nap time. I also wonder how long REM lasts and what ancient people you were referring to. Overall, maybe if we all got more sleep we can perform daily tasks better.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree that sleep drastically helps the human body. When we get adequate sleep our body feels more energetic, it helps the mind think better, and the physical activity that we can be doing will be better accomplished than someone that only had 5 hours of sleep. Which is why 5 year olds get so hyped when they come home from school because they sleep at school all day. Sleep helps us lose weight and we recover from injuries way faster. I wish in high school they can have a nap class because that’ll help every student out on this campus.
ReplyDeleteSleep on the human body is very important and can benefit us in so many ways. Throughout are days we hardly give our body a chance to regenerate energy and instead we continuously go on till we are completely drained. Even then we tend to push ourselves over the limit and be sleep deprived. Naps would certainly help this problem and can be beneficial to all of our well beings. Proof of this is when my little cousin comes home from preschool and still has the energy to destroy the house and attempt front flips off the couch.
ReplyDeleteI find this very interesting. It would be nice to practice this ancient tribal sleeping schedule. I am constantly losing hours of sleep during the week days and then I gain it all back during the weekend. This brings me to a question I have. When I sleep for more than eight hours, I still feel tired. How long does REM sleep last? Does REM sleep stop during a certain time. What happens if you sleep past the recommended sleeping schedule?
ReplyDeleteMan, those ancient societies knew the power of napping. I personally feel that the "standard" contemporary sleeping schedule should be different, it's too hard to save all of your sleeping for one large chunk in the night time.
ReplyDeleteThen again, it's hard to force anyone to sleep on any one specific schedule
It's great to know that ancient societies already knew the great importance of sleep. Sleeping for at least 6 hours is something I've always hear from adults. I find when I have all my work done at a time that I can get that many hours of sleep, I get extremely happy because I know I'm going to wake up feeling refreshed and will have enough energy to get through school and to do well during practice.
